Training Community Helpers

Training Animateurs Psycho-Sociaux (Community Mental Health Workers) in Huye, Nyaruguru, and Gisagara to support genocide survivors.

The program consists of providing trainings to field agents who intervene in psychological assistance (APS) and creating therapeutic groups to victims of psychological trauma. In addition, it helps prevent cases of traumatic crisis during the commemoration period. Through the supervision sessions, psychotherapists and psycho-social assistants who are responsible, on a daily basis, to support people with psychological problems, the project helps them to keep their distance from the problems of their patients.

APS (Animateurs Psycho-Sociaux)
  • Working closely with the survivors in the community
  • Assisting the survivors in different problems and provide the advocacy
  • Transferring the unsolved cases to the psychologist on district level
  • Reporting on a daily basis of what has been done and the issues found on field
Activity 1

Capacity building for selected committee members from the cell, sector to district level: The capacity building activities will target all members of the groups from the cell to district level in the district where the spaces have been operating. The capacity building will contribute to better follow-up of the spaces and increase sustainability

Activity 2

Provide ongoing support and mentorship to the 82 opened therapeutic groups. The groups are composed of 25 people each and will be monitored so that those that reach graduation can be supported to initiate an activity that contributes to their independence. Your wellbeing center will identify those activities together with the leaders of the group

Activity 3

Support selected initiatives that complement the healing process for the members. The support will include income generating activities to the groups of survivors that demonstrate a good process. committees at the cell level support by the group leaders and local leaders shall follow up on the success of the activities.

Activity 4

Conduct monthly community sharing sessions at the sector level with members of the community and those from therapeutic groups. These sessions shall be organized between members of the spaces for peace, community members and those survivors living in the same village but who are not members of the therapeutic groups.

Activity 5

During this period, your wellbeing center deliver a training and monthly clinical supervision for the APS who support the 82 therapeutic spaces that have been established. The APS for these groups will be given supervision and supported to continue facilitating the groups through follow up trainings. Each APS will receive follow up training.
